Zero Trust has become one of the most widely adopted security models in modern organizations. The premise is straightforward: never trust and always verify. Every request is validated, access is limited, and identity is continuously authenticated. On paper, it’s a powerful shift away from perimeter-based thinking! The same pattern shows up in high-friction environments. Zero Trust can increase prompts, denials, and verification steps. While these controls strengthen security, they also introduce interruption. Over time, repeated interruptions can lead to habituation. Users click through alerts more quickly. They look for shortcuts. They prioritize productivity over protocol.
Humans adapt to friction, and skilled attackers rely on that.
The Myth That Zero Trust Eliminates Social Engineering Risk
One of the more subtle risks with Zero Trust adoption is the belief that it “solves” social engineering…but it doesn’t. You can think of it like reducing a blast radius; it limits lateral movement and strengthens identity validation.
What it cannot do however is eliminate urgency, authority, fear, or trust…the core psychological levers used in influence operations. Technology verifies credentials while Humans interpret context.
An email from “IT Support” asking for immediate action during a system outage doesn’t get evaluated purely on technical merit. It’s processed through stress, time pressure, and perceived authority. That’s where social engineering lives.
